Plan the upkeep before self-hosting AI
Before running an AI model yourself, compare it with a managed service on workload, capacity, upkeep, support and data.
Running an AI model yourself means taking on a service, including its quiet hours and busy periods. Our position is that a self-hosting proposal is incomplete until it accounts for capacity, maintenance and recovery. Compare that full commitment with paying a provider to run the model before buying hardware.
Imagine a business using AI to sort internal documents for staff review. Work arrives in uneven batches, and the team can tolerate a short wait. Write down the expected daily volume, the busiest period and the longest acceptable delay. Decide what happens to a document the model cannot classify confidently. Keeping it in a queue for a person may be more useful than forcing an answer.
Compare two ways to provide that service. With managed inference, an outside provider runs the model while your team connects it to the workflow. With self-hosting, your team also takes responsibility for the environment running it. Managed services still need integration, access controls, quality checks and a response to interruptions. Self-hosting adds choices about equipment, capacity, monitoring and maintenance. The right balance depends on the workload and the support available.
Build the comparison around a representative test. Include long documents, unusual formats and ambiguous categories. Try the expected busy period, record delays and review the classifications. Rehearse an interrupted batch and check how work resumes. A small trial gives evidence about those conditions; it does not establish how the service will behave under every future load.
Then account for the work between requests. A self-hosted machine may sit idle while still needing power, space and upkeep. Include staff time, support, updates and eventual replacement alongside hardware. For managed inference, include usage charges, limits, support arrangements and the work your team retains. Neither a downloadable model nor a low advertised rate establishes the total cost of your service.
Check the model's licence and trace where documents, results and logs travel. Available weights alone do not guarantee private processing or unrestricted use. Assign a maintainer and a backup, agree how changes are checked, and decide when a person should pause the workflow. Devmojos helps businesses connect AI to everyday work. We recommend putting these operating decisions into the project from the start. Write down the service your team could maintain, then test that plan before committing to equipment.
